The story

In Keldravan, a coastal kingdom of stilt-cities and whale-bone bridges, the sea vanished overnight — pulled into the sky as a hanging, motionless wall of water that hovers above the horizon like a second heaven. Nine-year-old harbor orphan Wren, mute since birth, scavenges the exposed seabed with a lantern that burns with cold blue tide-fire, the last living scrap of the ocean. When she pries a barnacled crown of salt crystal from a shipwreck, the wall of water shudders and leans, and the lantern shows her a vision: a vast sleeping figure buried in the deepest trench, dreaming the sea, robbed of its crown by human hands generations ago. Wren begins the walk down the dry ocean floor, through forests of petrified kelp, past beached leviathans becoming stone, across plains of cracked salt where drowned ships lie like cathedrals on their sides. She is followed by Marrick, a scarred tidewarden who once served the crown-thieves and now wants only to protect the child, and hunted by Ossuvain, the Salt King — a towering figure armored in fused crystal who rules the drained deep and knows that if the sea returns, his kingdom of dust and plunder drowns. Ossuvain's salt-hounds and glass-armored riders chase Wren across the trench-lands; Marrick buys her passage through a collapsing shipwreck cathedral at terrible cost, dragged down by hounds as she runs. In the final descent Wren reaches the trench floor, where the sleeping god lies coiled and enormous, and Ossuvain corners her on the god's own ribcage. She cannot speak, so she raises the lantern and lets it go: the tide-fire pours into the crown as she sets it on the god's brow. The sea remembers. The hanging wall of water breaks and falls in a mile-high curtain, drowning the salt kingdom and Ossuvain with it, while the god rises through the flood and carries Wren upward in a bubble of blue light. She surfaces in a reborn harbor at dawn, the stilt-cities floating again, Marrick washed ashore alive and coughing, and the crown burning like a small sun far below in water that is finally, endlessly moving.
