KHAROSVANE: The Salt Wolf Crown

The story

In a world where the ocean froze mid-storm into a vast white desert of salt — waves locked forever mid-break — the last human settlements survive by harvesting brine from the frozen swells. Wren, a mute girl who reads the salt like scripture, digs into a collapsed wave and uncovers the Salt Wolf Crown: a spiked ring of living crystal that hums, grows, and weeps fresh water. Her village's harvest master, Odrin, tries to sell it to the Pale Drovers who ride glass-boned wolves across the flats; when the deal sours, the Drovers' master — the Salt Wolf, a towering figure whose armor is fused salt and whose face is a wolf skull of clear crystal — razes the village and takes the crown's twin horn. Wren flees on a wind-sled with the crown, joined by Bask, a scarred ex-Drover who defected, and Mim, a small scavenger who rides a tamed salt-hound. They cross the Petrified Sea: through a forest of frozen waterspouts, through the ribcage of a fossilized leviathan, past mirage-cities that shimmer and dissolve. The crown grows on Wren's arm, crystallizing her skin — the price of carrying it. The Salt Wolf pursues them with a pack that runs on all fours over the white, howling in shattering tones that crack the salt beneath their feet. At the Drowned Throne — a sunken cathedral of black basalt at the sea's deepest petrified point — Wren learns the truth: the crown is a stopper, and the world's water was not lost but locked, held inside the salt itself. Odrin, alive and burned, arrives having sold his loyalty to the Salt Wolf for a promised cup of true water. Bask dies holding the cathedral gate. In the throne chamber, the Salt Wolf demands the crown so he alone may unlock and ration the seas; Wren, crystallizing to the shoulder, drives the crown into the throne's socket instead. The salt sea shatters. Water erupts upward in a wall a thousand feet high, dissolving the glass wolves, dissolving the Salt Wolf's armor to reveal an ordinary drowning man. Wren's crystal arm melts. She surfaces on a raft of cathedral timber with Mim and the salt-hound as the first ocean in a hundred years rolls green and living beneath them, and on the horizon the old harvest villages float, waiting to become ports.
