The story

In a fogbound estuary town where the tide runs backward for eleven minutes each night, salvage mechanic WREN TALLOW keeps the black lamp that guides the Mirror Ferry — a barge that, during those eleven minutes, carries the recently drowned back to shore, one soul per crossing, provided a living body stays behind in trade. The town's ferrymaster HOLLIS CADE has run this economy for decades, trading the desperate for the dead and warehousing the traded in a flooded cannery below the waterline. When Wren's younger sister MARA is taken as collateral against a debt Wren never agreed to, Wren stops waiting. She strips the black lamp for parts, builds a false beacon from salvaged mirrors and diving glass, and begins learning the crossing's rules by watching: chalk tallies on the ferry's ribs, the drowned counted in and out, the eleven-minute window measured by a brass tide-clock Cade wears on a chain. Her first attempt fails — she reaches the cannery, sees Mara sealed behind glass in a flooded bay, and is driven back by Cade's dredgemen, losing two fingers of glove and her only diving rig. Rebuilding from wreck salvage, Wren recruits ODESSA VANE, a former ferry pilot with reversed lungs who was traded and came back wrong, and together they map the tide-clock's rhythm across three nights of failed crossings, sabotage, and pursuit through the sunken cannery's catwalks. On the final night Wren floods the ferry's counting-hold to make the tally unreadable, sets forty salvaged mirrors alight along the seawall so the crossing cannot find its shore, and dives to cut Mara free. The trade demands a body. Odessa, already half-returned, steps onto the barge and takes the crossing herself, buying the window open. Cade, scrambling to restore the count, is caught on the deck as the eleven minutes close and the tide reverses with him aboard — carried out as the ledger's last entry. Dawn finds the estuary running the right way for the first time in a century: the barge gone, the cannery draining, Wren and Mara on the mudflats among forty cooling mirrors, and the black lamp dark for good.
