VALTORRA: The Gilded Monsoon

The story

Valtorra is a stilt-city of brass refineries built above a drowned river valley, where every monsoon the Merchant Bank lowers its entire gold reserve — a cathedral of iron and glass called the Sinking House — down a colossal chain shaft into the floodwater, safe from raiders until the dry season lifts it again. Odile Vantar spent nine years diving those chains for the bank until a cable failure crushed her hand and the bank buried the report; she now hauls scrap in the rain-slums. When she recovers a stolen counterweight schematic from a drowned survey barge, she recruits Tobiah Renk, a crane rigger banned from the yards, and Wick, a teenage roof-runner who can read the city's signal flags, and they rehearse the descent on a capsized ferry using chalk lines, buckets and a stopwatch. On flood night they ride the vault down inside a brass diving bell clamped to its underside, cutting into the floor as the water climbs the gold stacks; Wick spoofs the signal towers, Tobiah jams the chain brakes, and Odile fills sled after sled with ingots hauled up through the counterweight shaft. Warden Cassiel Draye spots a false flag on the tower and orders the sluice gates opened early, dropping the vault a hundred feet in seconds and pinning the crew in rising black water. Tobiah is crushed keeping a brake pawl open long enough for the sled train to clear; Odile, out of air, welds the ingots to the counterweight itself, and when the drowned vault reaches bottom the imbalance rips the chains free and fires the counterweight — and the gold — straight up the shaft into the rain. Draye reaches the shaft head to find the ingots raining down onto the flooded market where the whole slum is waiting with nets and boats, an unrecoverable fortune scattered across ten thousand hands. Odile surfaces alone in the ruined bell, keeps a single ingot stamped with Tobiah's rigging mark, and walks out through a city picking gold out of the water.
