The story

On Harrow Spit, a black-sand island where a decommissioned lighthouse still turns out of habit, mute-by-choice mechanic Sena Vool scavenges wrecks for brass. A trawler burns offshore; she drags ashore a bleeding woman, Adrienne Kol, handcuffed to a waterproof case. Inside: a ledger of oiled pages naming every ship deliberately sunk on this coast for insurance money. A second body washes in — throat opened, no water in the lungs. Sena rigs the lamp and discovers the rule that governs the night: a tall man in a rubberized coat, the Warden, moves only in the dark, freezing mid-stride whenever the beam sweeps him, closing dozens of meters each time the light passes. Sena times the rotation — seventy seconds of dark, four of light — and turns the island into a clock. The two women run the shoreline in metered sprints, sheltering in the beam's arc, crossing the salt flats where mirrors of tidewater double the light. Midway, the drive gears strip and the lamp stutters; the Warden takes Adrienne's leg with a gaff and drags her into a shipbreaker's yard of rusted hulls. Sena follows, using welding arcs, flare guns and a hull of shattered wheelhouse glass to make her own light, and learns the Warden is no ghost but the harbourmaster whose name fills the ledger's last page — his coat sewn with the reflective tape of the men he drowned. She cuts him from a hanging chain and pins him under a collapsing gantry, but he rises. In the finale Sena climbs the tower as the fog thickens to swallow the beam, floods the gallery with the lamp's spare mercury float, and cranks the mechanism by hand while Adrienne bleeds out below. The Warden reaches the lantern room; Sena shatters the glass housing, and the unfiltered beam — no longer sweeping, held still on him — burns him fixed in place until dawn takes the fog. At sunrise, a coastguard cutter finds two women on the gallery rail, the ledger open, and a shape on the black sand that the tide is already erasing.
