VESPERGLASS: The Argent Fall

The story

In a world lit by a cracked moon, silver shards rain across the obsidian flats once every nineteen years — the Argent Fall — and the mirrored city of Vesperglass harvests them, focusing their glow through a cathedral of lenses to keep one square mile in permanent daylight while the rest of the world freezes in blue dark. Wren, an orphaned shard-runner who sails a bladed skiff across the glass flats, wins a fortune-shard in the opening fall and brings it to the city gates, where the Archlens Mordant Kel takes it and turns her away with a coin. That night the shard cracks open in her hands and a fawn-limbed creature of living moonglass, Nix, unfolds from it — and Wren realizes the shards are not stone but eggs, and the city has been grinding a species into lamplight for nine hundred years. Hunted across the flats by Kel's mirror-riders, Wren follows Nix's homing instinct toward the Moonwell at the edge of the world, guided by Ollo, a blind lens-grinder who once cut the cathedral's great mirror and has spent his life regretting it. Kel pursues with the harvest fleet, torching the wild shard-fields to deny her cover, and in a running battle among the anchor towers Ollo turns the towers' mirrors on the fleet and dies buying Wren a night's lead. Nix weakens as the last fall thins; Wren reaches the Moonwell to find it choked with centuries of dead, ground-down shards — a mass grave of light. Kel corners her on the well's rim and offers the city's endless day; Wren shatters the cathedral's stolen master-lens instead, and the released light floods back up the sky. Nix leaps into the Moonwell and rises through the column of returning glow, and the moon knits shut above a world going silver from horizon to horizon. Vesperglass goes dark for the first time in nine centuries — and its people step outside to see, for the first time, that the whole night is lit.
